above ground rain garden
Paneltim® above ground rain garden tank

A rain garden collects rainwater runoff from a roof (or other impermeable surface), allowing the water to be filtered by vegetation before slowly moving into the stormwater system.  If there is an excessive amount of water going into the rain garden, an overflow pipe at the top directly sends water into the stormwater system to prevent water back up and flooding.

Rain gardens can be in the form of above or below ground tanks, or formed on a natural slope of land.  A rain garden is usually dry, only holding water during and after a rainfall.  As rain gardens generally drain within 12-48 hours, they don’t breed mosquitoes.

Whilst rain gardens assist to keep rainwater on site longer during a rainfall, they are most important for their effect on the health of urban waterways.  Like trade waste tanks, rain gardens act to slow the flow of water into the stormwater system whilst also filtering the water through the soil removing pollutants in the process.

Bespoke Fabrication

Viking Plastics manufacture a range of bespoke rain gardens and garden liners.

Every application is unique.  Viking utilises 6mm polyethylene (HDPE) to fabricate containment liners for rain gardens installed on the slope of a property. Rain garden tanks are fabricated using Paneltim® 50mm plastic construction panels.  Paneltim® is made from polypropylene (PP) and is UV stabilised.

Decorative Metal Cladding supplied by Metrix Group

The external finish may be clad in a variety of finishes like metal, timber, rendered ‘blue board’, tiled cement sheeting – the options are endless. Viking also fabricate 6mm “slip-in” liners for concrete or steel “containers”. This is particularly useful for garden applications in apartment blocks and commercial properties.

At Viking Plastics, we pride ourselves in our ability to manufacture to diverse specifications.  We work closely with water sensitive urban designers, architects and builders to deliver custom solutions.
